The narrative starts as Clay Jensen, our narrator, sends a mysterious package to someone. In the bundle, there are a total of thirteen narratives and seven cassette tapes. After listening, the tapes must be given by each individual to another individual on the list. She says that if anybody does not pass along them, a replica of the records will soon be made public. The tapes also have a map that as they listen to her narrative, listeners are intended to follow.
The story moves back and forth between Hannah's and the ideas and activities of Clay. This can be difficult to describe in a brief outline, so do not forget that Clay's ideas are constantly mixed in with the narratives of Hannah.
The thirteen narratives are as follows: Hannah's first kiss, Justin Foley, began rumors that they did more than simply kiss. Jessica Davis ended up hitting Hannah, making a scar on her brow and was upset. Tyler Down supposedly shot images of Hannah. A superb imitation girl at school, Courtney Crimson, began rumors that Hannah had sex toys in her bedroom. Skye constantly isolates herself, he begins to wonder. There, he runs into Marcus Cooley, who invites a stone to throw at the window in Tyler. He learns that Marcus is on the tapes, so he should be guilty of something.
Marcus attempted to make a move on her after becoming matched up through a Valentine's Day survey. Onto a floor and she needed to push him from the booth to get him to quit.
Listening, Rosie's is headed toward by Clay; on his way he sees the Crestmont Theater, where Hannah and he worked the preceding summer. More records: When Hannah blown off Zach Dempsey's efforts to comfort her after the event with Marcus, Zach snitched the notes of encouragement left by classmates in her Peer Communications course for Hannah. Hannah actually trusted him and met Ryan Shaver in a poetry course; that's, until he printed it and snitched an extremely personal poem of Hannah's, ultimately causing more ridicule for Hannah.
Clay leaves Rosie discovers his buddy Tony waiting for him and 's. Tony tells him that he's the person who has got the second group of tapes, the ones which is published to the people if Clay's tapes are not passed on according to the wishes of Hannah. Clay is filled with questions, but Tony refuses to reply anything until the following record is listened to by Clay.
The ninth tape characteristics Clay and ensures him that he'd nothing related to the suicide of Hannah. He was actually extremely great to Hannah; they kissed and he admitted his feelings to her! Justin Foley, from the initial tape, is back on the records. While she was unconscious, this time around, Justin let Bryce Walker. Now, Tony describes that around the day of the departure of Hannah, he discovered the tapes when he got home, waiting for him. He called her parents to make an effort to warn them, when he understood what Hannah was up to, however he was too late. Since that time, he is been following individuals on the list making certain they follow the directions of Hannah.
One last dive to the tapes: Following a celebration, Jenny Kurtz offered Hannah a ride home, but knocked a stop sign down together with her automobile. Bryce Walker began to reach Hannah in a hot tub one night, and he continued to rape her. The novel ends with Clay after posting the tapes, likely to school the following day. When he gets there, he sees the girl from the bus, Skye Miller.
