It's the mid ‘50s in Virginia. They go off despite it being an amount of segregation into a drag race which Richard moderates; both Black and White individuals are in attendance. Bricks are laid down by Richard since he works on building houses, another day. There's a squared away segment of soil and he asks her where she thinks bathroom as well as the kitchen should go. He tells her he’s asks her to marry him and bought an acre of land.
The following time we see Mildred, she is pregnant. They return to town, married, and Richard works at an auto shop, keeping his union a secret. When he inquires, “What did he need?”, she replies, “To locate you.” Richard collars his marriage certificate on his wall.
Richard and Mildred go to sleep together, that night. The sheriff chests into the home, expecting to see them engaged in sex but instead they are just sleeping. The sheriff asks “What are you really doing with that girl?” Mildred answers, “I’m his wife.” The sheriff tells her, “ That great here. You went out of town knowing your wedding wasn’t not illegal in Virginia.”
Mildred and Richard are taken to the neighborhood jail and kept in different cells. He could be released on bail the following morning but she's told she will need to remain there until they can see the judge on Monday, which can be several days away. Richard is prohibited to talk to her so she is left alone in jail, pregnant. He immediately sets out to hire a lawyer, when Richard turns to his house. At home, Richard’s mother now tells him, “I told you not to marry that girl.” He responds, “I thought you enjoyed her.” She responds, I like numerous individuals.
Mildred is finally released from jail and attends court with Richard and their lawyer. They plead guilty. The judge says exactly as forecast - jail time can be avoided by them only if they leave town. In Private, Mildred and Richard balk at this notion, both wanting to keep in the town they love and grew up in. However they have no choice so that they move to Washington, D.C.
Richard and Mildred try to adjust to the city life but it doesn’t satisfy them. They prefer an area full of fields and grass than buildings and concrete. Although they attempt to make the very best of it, Mildred notes that she always believed Richard’s mom would be the one to deliver their baby, as she does for many families. They drive into her brother’s automobile into town and transfer Mildred midway. Richard then follows behind after and stays low. This way, they could appear in town individually because it is prohibited to be there.
Mildred gives birth, together with the help of Richard’s mom. Richard is outside the next day and also the authorities arrive, having been alerted to his return. About Richard although Mildred says she’s not there they ask. If he doesn’t recover her the cops threatens to beat him into a pulp. Mildred hears from in. She hands him over to her sister and kisses her newborn baby; she afterward comes out on the patio, showing herself.
Now both Richard and Mildred are in jail. They have been focused on serving jail time for violating the court order. In court, their lawyer from before returns and - though he knew nothing of their strategy - maintains that he had told them they shouldn’t be faulted for his misinformation and that Mildred could give birth in Virginia. Outside, they make an effort to thank him for his deed but he merely asks them to not return. Obviously that lie will simply work once.
