Brimstone is a beautifully constructed and photographed western thriller that features Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning in performances that are dedicated. The end result is a picture that looks amazing and is definitely focussed on what it desires to reach, but which bound the shark at several crucial moments, and left me wondering whether it was simply objectionable, or great with occasional misjudgments.
But nevertheless, in this chapter I had been convinced this movie would be a well-played, tense, taut thriller. That's until a closing action of violence so illogical it pulled me from the movie. But that has been okay, because we subsequently went to the next chapter, and an obvious reset of the movie, as we met with a young runaway girl sold into a brothel keeper and being picked up by Chinese travellers. This was by far the successful and best section of the movie but once again completely jumped the shark with violence by the finish.
And it absolutely was remarkable that at these two points in the movie, several men and women walked out. Bu the movie got extremely debatable in its fourth and third section, where the authentic temperament of the connection involving the girl along with the preacher is shown in all its detail that is melodramatic, exploitative.
Whether this film thought intensely about the best way to depict violence and had only exercised just a little restraint it might happen to be a truly fascinating, genre-bending film. However, Martin Koolhoven, the director, appears to have zero instinct about what is merely offensive and what is provocative. It is an enormous pity because Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce are definitely going for something high quality here, however there is let down by way of a manager having a tin ear.
