It is now July 2001. Robby gives a lively address about his departure. Another reporter, Mike takes a slice of cake downstairs to the Limelight section, a small office with just two others on staff - Matt Carroll and Sacha Pfeiffer. They're the fact-finding team for the Boston Globe working hard on a narrative, they should eat the cake for his or her lunch. They mention how miserable it's to see Stewart mention many others are leaving the business and go into a larger newspaper. The newest manager that's coming on Monday is believed to have cut lots of folks in the paper he ran in Miami; they stress he is planning to phase Limelight out. Robby will get lunch with him although nobody has met him.
We cut to that particular lunch meeting. When Robby proposes a Red Sox game is checked out by Marty, Marty describes he is really not a baseball fan but merely wanting to get a sense of his new city. He asks about Limelight, which Robby describes is a four-man team that does fact-finding that reports to Ben Bradlee Jr. They are searching for a fresh narrative and just completed a story on a building site that was negligent.
Marty asks up to annually since they do not like to run things or how much time it takes and Robby says it might take weeks. Marty asks the things they're working on but Robby tells him since everyone is worried about losing their job all their investigation continues to be on their new editor. Marty notes as the World Wide Web is making classifieds outdated, this is clear and they’re losing sales. Robby inquires if this is the reason why he asked about Marty although Limelight tells him he'd another motive.
The following day, a 10:30 assembly where Marty is attended by Robby He asks them when they have read Eileen McNamara's column in regards to the Geoghan case. They are just vaguely comfortable so he tells them it is in regards to a priest that molested children on the past 30 years in six distinct parishes. The attorney maintains he's records to prove it although this is denied by the cardinal. He says since it is just been in their newspaper in the past six months, they should compose a story. Ben affirms he is proposing they sue the Catholic Church. Marty is not stressed.
In Ben's office, Robby and Ben upgrade Mike on Marty's proposition to sue for the sealed records in the Geoghan case. Eileen, who has composed this article, gives the lowdown on the individuals involved to them. So they're not optimistic she'll rule in their favor the judge on the case is Catholic. Marty indicates as it is now an investigative report, the storyline is taken by Spotlight.
Robby tells the Limelight group about their narrative that is new - not only the Geoghan case but that Cardinal Law knew concerning the claims and covered it up. They choose to inquire the attorney, Eric MacLeish, along with Geoghan for the victims of molestation a decade before. Mike determines to meet with Mr. Garabedian, who is reaping the present casualties. He is told he's a “style” which does not phase Mike - “styles are liked by him.”
