In the one-word name to the entire assumption, just about everything in LIFE cries Alien. Honestly, that isn't a surprise at all, particularly given the fact Paul Wernick and screenwriters Rhett Reese of the Zombieland and Deadpool celebrity occur to be both lovers of Ridley Scott's 1979 aforementioned seminal sci fi classic. But most of us film enthusiasts would understand that any sci fi genre attempts to emulate the exact same ALIEN convention whether directly or indirectly, generally resulted into both of the three common criticisms: "clone", "rip off' or "pales in comparison".
The film is surprisingly respectable enough alone, while LIFE does bear all the indistinguishable DNA of alien. Daniel Espinosa, famous for Safe House and directing easy money, may happen to be a first-timer in the scifi terrain however he does show his value in managing a number of the actual suspenseful minutes of the film and complex set pieces. At one stage, a bravura was reached by McGarvey, albeit CG-assisted single-take scene through the opening minutes where the film introduces each one of the characters across the space station.
As the screenplay, LIFE is as clear-cut as it goes for. Reese and Wernick surely honour the narrative beat of alien, striding along with the ancient set up. It's also a refreshing change of pace for all these screenwriting couple to dump their customary mix of in jokes and pop culture references seen in Deadpool and Zombieland in favour to get a serious-minded sci fi film terrain. Kudos also visit Wernick and Reese for subverting a number of the otherwise foreseeable results, like the passing of the primary character along with a negative turn to the ending of the film.
But LIFE might have already been better if not for the film's over-reliance of paying court to alien. Even with the dedicated performances from the small scale ensemble cast not one of them actually reached a specific amount of above-average performing art beyond their purposes that were dutiful.
